Carpe Data released its 2025 Online Fraud Insights report this week, revealing that disability claims had the highest rate of misrepresentation at 8.9%, followed by workers' compensation at 6.9% and auto claims at 5.7%. The analysis examined injury fraud patterns across the United States, identifying top locations, demographics, and tactics used by fraudulent claimants.

The report found that 82.7% of insurance fraud was discovered on social media platforms, with Facebook serving as the largest source of red flags. Claimants frequently posted about travel, workouts, and lifestyle activities that contradicted their injury claims. Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and X also proved valuable for fraud detection. The data came from monitoring open injury claims throughout 2024 across auto, workers' compensation, general liability, and disability lines.

Younger claimants aged 18 to 24 were more likely to trigger fraud alerts, particularly for physical activity and unlawful activity-related flags. The report attributed this to riskier behaviors and cultural pressure to overshare on social media. Additionally, 35% of all fraud referrals occurred within the first two months of a claim, as claimants often made revealing online updates before traditional fraud detection processes began.

The top cities for fraudulent injury claims included Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Houston, Brooklyn, San Antonio, Atlanta, Dallas, Tampa, and San Diego. Carpe Data attributed high fraud rates in these areas to factors including strong personal injury markets, attorney-driven fraud, high population density, urban fraud rings, tourism, transient populations, and workers' compensation law loopholes.
